Course content
The course «Fundamentals of Translation Theory (Turkish)» introduces students to such fundamental concepts as equivalence in translation and the methods for achieving it through lexical, grammatical, and stylistic transformations; to the pragmatics of translation; text compression in the translation process, and editing of the translated text. The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the main principles of modern translation studies and to provide them with a theoretical and practical foundation for the further development of the translation skills and competencies necessary for their future careers. The lecture course is aimed at developing conscious translation practice based on an understanding of the principles of the translation process as an act of interlingual communication, its limitations, and the ability to identify translation challenges and develop strategies and tactics for resolving them in specific contexts. This discipline also aims to broaden and deepen students’ general cultural horizons and translation training. Knowledge of theory implies the student’s ability to reflect on cultural differences, the linguistic culture of the world, and differences in the mentalities of the peoples of the languages being studied. The educational objective of the course «Fundamentals of Translation Theory» is to foster professionalism in translation practice, a sense of responsibility for the completed translation, a constant desire to acquire new knowledge, and high ethical standards. The course is taught through lectures and seminars (for a total of 120 hours, including 34 hours of lectures, 26 hours of seminars, and 60 hours of independent study). The course is taught over the course of one semester and concludes with an exam.
