Learning outcomes
Know: Forms of mineral bodies; physical, mechanical and mining characteristics of rocks; types and purposes of mining excavations; general features of exploration mining; technological processes car-ried out during mining; tools and machines using in geological excavations; basic methods and tech-niques of drilling.
Be able to: classify rocks by physical and mechanical properties; select technical tools for exploration of mineral deposits depending on the morphology, size and other mining parameters of targets; refine the optimal parameters of excavations and drill-holes; geological logging of excavations and drill-holes; calculating the volume of mining operations, materials and time of excavating, calculation of the necessary parameters of drilling.
Form of study
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful completion of the courses "General and historical geology", "Structural geology and geologi-cal mapping"
Course content
A wide range of issues related to the methodology of geological exploration, classification and use of mining operations, drilling for the purpose of prospecting, exploration and mining of mineral deposits are covered. The main techniques and methods of geological documentation of exploration excavations and drill-holes are considered. The principles of rock destruction, both by explosion and non-explosive methods, mining and technological properties and characteristics of rocks, methods and technical tools for driving of surface and underground excavations in rocks with different mechanical properties. The issues of rock pressure and fastening of mining excavations are considered too.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures and practical work, independent work of the student
Assessment methods and criteria
The control is carried out according to the modular rating system and involves 6 practical works (where students must demonstrate the quality of acquired knowledge and solve problems using the methods and tools outlined by a lecturer) and 2 tests. During the semester, a student can receive a maximum of 60 (minimum 36) rating points. The final quiz is conducted as an exam where the maximum score is 40 points and marginal score is 24 points.
