Learning outcomes
To know the main representatives of technical stones, modern methods of their production and fields of application. Know the peculiarities of the material composition and structure of the main representatives of technical stones. To know the needs of production in the petrographic study of the main representatives of technical stones. To be able to apply petrographic methods for the study of technical stones. Be able to diagnose the main representatives of technical stones and distinguish them from natural rocks. To be able to carry out a petrographic description of technical stones, revealing the peculiarities of its material composition and structure.

Ability to use microscopic methods for petrographic study of rocks.
Course content
This discipline provides theoretical knowledge about the existing variety of artificial stone materials, methods of their production, material composition and structural features. Technical stones (TS) include: stone casting, glass production products, water-resistant materials, ceramics, binding materials, metallurgical and fuel slags, etc. The methods of petrographic studies of technical stones are separately considered, the main purpose of which is to ensure the creation of new and improvement of the properties of existing stone materials, improvement of technologies for their production and operation, quality control and expansion of fields of application. The discipline is intended for students, scientists and workers in the geology, metallurgy, construction, materials science, chemistry, archeology and forensics. The goal is to provide knowledge about TS, modern technologies of their production, features of composition and structure; develop TS research skills.

Assessment methods and criteria
Semester assessment: 1) Two test papers on the lecture material - max 20 (min 12) points 2) Current survey - max 20 (min 12) points 3) Independent works - max 20 (min 12) points Final assessment - credit: max 40 (min 24) points; During the assessment, the student answers the test questions in writing. Final assessment in the form of credit is optional. The results are evaluated on a 100-point scale. The final grade is assigned based on the results of the student's work during the semester (the sum of points for systematic work). A student is not allowed to take credit if he scored less than 20 points during the semester. Control involves: 1) conducting 2 written control tests based on the lecture material, one within the semester, the second at the end; 2) a current survey before each lesson based on the material of the previous one; 3) evaluation of the self-seeding report; The final assessment is conducted in the form of a credit, which includes a written test.
