The role and significance of sustainable development as a mechanism for mitigating risks is explored through: 1) theoretical models of eco-safe development aimed at addressing global human problems; 2) the system of UN international documents that outline the basic concepts of sustainable development; 3) indicators of sustainable development for countries and regions that allow for the identification of areas with the highest risk levels; 4) economic and regulatory mechanisms for mitigating major threats and transitioning to an ecologically safe development trajectory.
