Learning outcomes
To know the historical processes of the development of international humanitarian law; the current state of international humanitarian law, its main treaty and customs sources; the main types of armed conflicts and the difference in their regimes; the main categories of participants in armed conflicts and protected persons; basic rules on the role of international intergovernmental organizations and humanitarian organizations in armed conflicts. To be able to logically and professionally substantiate and express own views on issues of international v law; apply rules of international humanitarian law in accordance with the situation and type of armed conflict; prepare reports and recommendations on international humanitarian law for the public authorities of Ukraine.
Form of study
Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Knowledge of the Fundamental Theory of International Law, Public International Law, International Legal Regulation, Law of Treaties, International Human Rights Law. 2. Ability to analyse and establish the content of legal norms and provisions of international and national law, to wit international treaties and national laws and bylaws; to apply the norms and principles of international and national law, as well as decisions of relevant international courts and tribunals for preparing arguments. 3. Have the basic skills of legal analysis and synthesis, critical thinking, working out of a considerable amount of legal material while providing one’s own conclusions and proposals.
Course content
Thematic plan of the discipline: 1. Concept and scope of international humanitarian law. 2. Sources and principles of international humanitarian law. 3. Civilians and combatants. Legal protection of prisoners of war 4. Legal protection of the wounded, sick and shipwrecked. 5. Legal protection of civilians in armed conflict. 6. Prohibited means and methods of warfare. 7. Law of non-international armed conflicts. 8. Implementation of international humanitarian law. 9. Responsibility for violations of international humanitarian law. 10. The International Committee of Red Cross, Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

Assessment methods and criteria
Evaluation is carried out according to the modular rating system. Current control: answers (up to 48 points), written assignment (up to 22 points), final modular test (up to 30 points). The form of final control is an exam. The exam is conducted in writing. The student's answer to the exam – up to 40 points.
