To know: the essence and logic of the icon; the main problems of classification the main types of icons; the main ways of interpreting the symbolism of icons; the role of the icon in religious worship; classical and modern concepts of prominent Christian scholars of iconology. Be able to: analyse and explain the main trends in the artistic strategy of contemporary visual culture; decode the symbolism of the icon in religious worship and art; characterise and classify the main types of icons; master professional terminology. Communication: use knowledge of foreign languages to analyse online information resources, read religious literature in preparation for seminars and writing independent works; present the results of independent work in the form of reports, messages, essays, presentations, notes. Autonomy and responsibility: independently search for and critically analyse literature on course issues.

Full-time form

Before taking this course, students should know the basic concepts of philosophy, ethics, aesthetics and cultural studies. Have a knowledge of the philosophical categorical apparatus; have an understanding of the basic facts of the history of Christianity; have an understanding of the main features of the dogma and cult of Christianity, their historical evolution. To be able to collect and interpret information on phenomena of the history of religion and culture, to have basic skills of scientific research and information management, use of foreign language professional sources on the history of religion. To have a philosophical categorical apparatus; skills of scientific research and information management; critical attitude and forecasting of socio-political, cultural and religious events and phenomena; use of foreign language professional cultural and religious information sources.

Icon in the Christian worldview and biblical anthropology Topic 3: Analysis of early Christian art and catacomb painting Topic 4. The icon in the liturgical space Topic 5. Icon veneration and iconoclasm Topic 6. Views on the art of the "Great Cappadocians" - Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa Topic 7. Iconography of Jesus Christ Topic 8: The work of St. John Damascene. John Damascene "Three Words in Defence of Icon Veneration" Topic 9: Iconography of the Holy Trinity Topic 10. Lecture, seminar, self-study

The semester grade is formed by the points obtained by the student in the process of mastering the material from all parts of the discipline. The total semester grade consists of the points obtained for 1) classroom work, 2) two self-study assignments. Assessment of semester work: Oral report, supplementary reports and participation in seminar discussions - 12 / 20 points Self-study No. 1 (conclusion on the main issues of the Ecumenical council) - 18 / 30 points Self-study No. 2 (writing an essay) - 18 / 30 points. All types of work in the semester have - a maximum of 80 points - a minimum of 48 points Final written test - 12/20 points.
