Prerequisites and co-requisites
The program is aimed at students who have got the qualification of a Bachelor degree and have successfully passed theoretical and practical language and translation disciplines. To study this course students must know the theoretical basis of translation studies disciplines, in particular: Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to Translation Studies, Comparative, Historical, and Typological Linguistics; to be able to use analytical thinking to solve problematic tasks in translation, particularly in translation from Ukrainian into English; to possess the system of knowledge and practical skills necessary to carry out scholarly research on current translation problems, and to apply them in professional activity.
Course content
The optional discipline «Translation Techniques from Ukrainian into English» is a component of the qualification for Master's degree students on the basis of ESP «Interpretation and Translation from English and the Second Western European Language». The discipline «Translation Techniques from Ukrainian into English» allows forming key knowledge of the theory and practice of translation from Ukrainian, taking into account syntax, compositional, morphological and lexical features. Moreover, this discipline allows students to master the basics of speech competence and promotes specialized training. Particular attention is paid to further formation of socio-cultural competence, and the study of translation strategies used in the process of text transformation. An important role is given to mastering the applied principles of translation, modern technology and the acquisition of practical skills in professional activity. The course ends up with a pass/fail exam.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Educational tasks during the semester: • To broaden students’ knowledge of translation studies and linguistics in the form of lectures and seminars; • To translate different specialized texts from Ukrainian into English; • To write abstracts of Ukrainian texts in English; • To make up and learn thematic glossaries; • To write tests.
Assessment methods and criteria
The total score for the discipline is determined by the sum of scores a student has gained during the semester. The final grade for the discipline (from 60 to 100 points) includes the sum of scores for the work during the semester (min 36 points and max 60 points) and the score for the final test (min 24 points and max 40 points). During the semester students are assessed according to the types of work and forms of control described in Paragraph 7.1. Students get a grade for the pass/fail exam in accordance with the results of their work during the semester and do not have to do any additional tasks to pass the exam. In order to be allowed to take the exam students who have got less than 60 points during the semester have to do a translation from Ukrainian into English and to answer theoretical questions. The tasks which are assessed to pass the exam are as follows: LO 1.1 – 1.4; LO 2.1 – 2.2; LO 3.1; LO 4.1. (LO is learning outcomes).
