Prerequisites and co-requisites
Students must have successfully completed the following courses: "Practical Course of the First Foreign Language (Portuguese)", the comprehensive discipline "Introduction to the Specialty", "Translation and Interpreting Practice", "Comparative Lexicology of the First Foreign Language and Ukrainian", "Comparative Grammar of the First Foreign Language and Ukrainian", "Terminology Studies (First Foreign Language)"; in particular, the basic concepts, practical knowledge, skills and abilities acquired in these disciplines must be based on: knowledge of the Portuguese and native languages, the main differences between them at the level of system, norm and usage and the ways to overcome them in translation; ability to perform the most common translation techniques and apply methods of achieving equivalence, ability to perform non-specialized natural consecutive interpreting from Portuguese into Ukrainian and vice versa.
Course content
The aim of the course is to teach the basics of consecutive interpreting techniques from Portuguese into Ukrainian and from Ukrainian into Portuguese, taking into account the communicative, linguistic and cognitive features of interlingual and intercultural communication in typical situations of bilateral interpreting. The most important interpreting techniques in the Portuguese/Ukrainian language pair are considered, and elements of crisis management in interpreting are introduced: calquing, hyperonymic translation, etc. The course also addresses the necessary intercultural adaptations in a bilateral interpreting situation, as well as the rational combination of interpreting shorthand with the use of long-term memory and memorization techniques. Lectures are conducted in Portuguese, and practical classes are held in Portuguese and Ukrainian. The course ends with a mid-course control in the seventh semester and an exam in the eighth.
