Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites and performance requirements Students are expected to possess knowledge of the history of the world and Ukrainian education (within the scope of the secondary education program); to be able to identify, analyze, and compare historical and cultural information; analyze their own abilities, inclinations, and interests; to possess elementary skills in processing academic texts, systematizing materials as well as planning and managing own educational activities.
Course content
Course description The course explores the main trends and stages of the development of higher (university-level) education in Ukraine and in the world. It also offers an analysis and objective assessment of the reasons and main historical prerequisites for the emergence of universities in the world. The course consists of 2 content modules. Module 1 focuses on the influence of the world university traditions on the development of the Ukrainian educational system, the history of the Ukrainian university education as well as Kyiv University. Module 2 focuses on the history and development of Philology and philological research at Kyiv University. The course ends with a pass/fail test.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are discussion contributions at practical sessions, mini-tests/blitz-questioning, an independent assignment (report, essay), a presentation/case-study, and a module test. A student can score max. 100 and min. 60 points for the performance in these activities, A detailed description of the activities and formative assessment criteria is presented in the course curriculum posted on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system, a pass/fail assessment score is made up of the scores earned for the performance during the term (max. 100, min. 60 points) and does not involve any additional assessment events. The end-of-course assessment score is the sum of points earned for discussion contributions in classroom performance (5 points), mini-tests/blitz-questioning (10 points), an independent assignment (25 points), a presentation/case study (25 points), and a module test (25 points). To succeed in the pass/fail assessment, students are required to gain a passing grade of 60; students fail if the score is below 60.
