Learning outcomes
PLO 5. Make use of major professional concepts and appropriate terminology. PLO 13. Know modern philological and pedagogical foundations of teaching Ukrainian language and literature, language norms, the socio-cultural development of the Ukrainian language, the use of language units in a certain context, language discourse of fiction and modernity, leading trends in the development of the literary process in Ukraine. PLO 17. Be able to work with theoretical and research sources (in particular, digital), search for, process, systematize, and use updated information, bibliography, and computer technologies in educational activities. PLO 21. Use the humanistic potential of the Ukrainian language and literature to shape the spirituality of a younger generation of Ukrainian citizens. Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites and performance requirements Successful performance in the course builds on the prior study of such courses as “Pedagogy”, “Ukrainian literature”, "Foreign literature", "Cultural studies", "Philosophy", "Age and educational psychology”. Students are also expected to know the theoretical basics of folk poetry included in the secondary school curriculum; to be able to identify folklore genre forms in statics; to have elementary skills of producing a summary of an academic text.
Course content
Course description The course aims to equip students with knowledge about: Ukrainian oral folk arts as an integrative system of traditional meanings transmitted verbally, actually, and visually; semiotics of an oral folk text, identification of its genre based on poetic markers (formula) and functional markers (context); exploration of textual features of a piece of collective folk arts and their correlation with the individually created piece; determination of polyfunctional links of folklore with other humanities; and skills of representing oral folk texts. The course is composed of two modules. Module 1 examines the categories of folklore studies and particularities of archaic forms of oral folk arts represented in ritual folklore. Module 2 focuses on the study of the genre paradigm of non-ritual folklore. The course ends with an examination.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are: answers at practical sessions, additions, participation in discussions, blitz-questioning, tests, and a presentation. For the performance in these activities, a student can score max. 60 and min. 36 points. A detailed description of activities and formative assessment is presented in the course curriculum posted on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system. It is made up of the scores for the coursework during a term (max. 60, min. 36 points) and the scores earned during the exam (max. 40, min. 24 points). Formative assessment considers answers at practical sessions (15 points), additions and participation in discussions (6 points), blitz-questioning (10 points), presentation delivery (5 points), preparation of the presentation (10 points). Summative assessment is a written exam.
