Learning outcomes
PLO 8. To know and understand the language system, the general properties of literature as an art of speech, the history of the Arabic language and literature, and to be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 13. To analyze and interpret works of Ukrainian and Arabic fiction and oral folk art, determine their specificity and place in the literary process of Arab countries and Ukraine. PLO 15. To carry out linguistic, literary and special philological analysis of Arabic texts of various styles and genres. PLO 17. To collect, analyze, systematize and interpret the facts of language and speech and use them for solving complex problems in specialized fields of professional activity and/or education.

Course content
The perpose of the discipline is to acquaint students with the process of the birth, formation and evolution of the novel genre in the Arabic-speaking world from the "an-Naghda" era (the last third of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century) to the present day, with the typological characteristics of the genre form of the novel in the works of the most prominent Arab authors, to provide an idea of the place of the modern Arabic novel in the system of world literature and the connections of this literary genre with other literary traditions in different historical stages.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Learning activities comprise interactive lectures and seminar classes. Students’ self-study involves preparation for oral responses, reports with the analyses of scientific literature, research presentation, precis, summaries.
Assessment methods and criteria
Semestral assessment is based on the oral responses, reports and presentations – 36/60 points, modular test papers – 12/20 points, term paper – 12/20 points. The credit is given based on the results of the student’s work throughout the entire semester and does not require additional assessment measures. Students who scored 60 points, the required minimum, receive “passed”. Students who failed to score 60 points, the required minimum, receive “failed”. Those students who scored totally less than 60 points during the semester period should complete a test paper in the items which he/she failed to pass. Final score 60-100 – passed; 0-59 – failed.
