Learning outcomes
PLO 8. To know and understand the language system, the general properties of literature as an art of speech, the history of the Arabic language and literature, and to be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 9. To characterize the dialectal and social varieties of the Arabic language, describe the sociolinguistic situation in the countries of the Arab East. PLO 12. To analyze Arabic linguistic units, determine their interaction and characterize linguistic phenomena and processes that cause them. PLO 15. To carry out linguistic, literary and special philological analysis of Arabic texts of various styles and genres. PLO 16. To know and understand the basic concepts, theories and concepts of the chosen philological specialization, to be able to apply it.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful mastering of the disciplines "The Arabic language: basic level"; "Introduction to Arabic Philology"; knowledge of the theoretical foundations of linguistics from the courses "Basics of Linguistics: Synchrony", " Basics of Linguistics: Diachrony".
Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to provide students with knowledge about the place of lexicology in the system of linguistic-Arabistic disciplines, the structure and composition of the lexicon of the Arabic literary language, the process of its formation and regularities of historical development; to highlight the phono-morphological variants of the Arabic vocabulary, the peculiarities of the word formation of the Arabic language and Arabic terminology, as well as the methods of compiling Arabic dictionaries and their types.The discipline is a part of the complex discipline "Theory and History of the Arabic Language" and has a theoretical orientation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Learning activities comprise interactive lectures and seminar classes. Self-study of students involves preparation for oral responses, participation in discussions, reports with the analyses of scientific literature, research presentation, and completion of term paper.
Assessment methods and criteria
Semestral assessment is based on the oral responses, written assignments, reports and presentations – 36/60 points, modular test papers – 12/20 points, term paper – 12/20 points. The credit is given based on the results of the student’s work throughout the entire semester and does not require additional assessment measures. Students who scored 60 points, the required minimum, receive “passed”. Students who failed to score 60 points, the required minimum, receive “failed”. Those students who scored totally less than 60 points during the semester period should complete a test paper in the items which he/she failed to pass. Final score 60-100 – passed; 0-59 – failed.
