Learning outcomes
PLO 7. To understand the main problems of Arabic philology and approaches to their solution using appropriate methods and innovative approaches. PLO 8. To know and understand the language system, the general properties of literature as an art of speech, the history of the Arabic language and literature, and to be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 15. To carry out linguistic, literary and special philological analysis of Arabic texts of various styles and genres. PLO 16. To know and understand the basic concepts, theories and concepts of the chosen philological specialization, to be able to apply it. PLO 17. To collect, analyze, systematize and interpret the facts of language and speech and use them for solving complex problems in specialized fields of professional activity and/or education.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful mastering of the following courses: “The Arabic Language: basic level”, “Lingual and regional studies of the Arab East countries”; knowledge of linguistic terminology and basic laws of language development from the course “Basics of Linguistics”.
Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to acquaint students with a set of knowledge about the content and main tasks of Arabic philology as one of the Arabist disciplines, to form a general idea of the methodology and current state of research in this field, to help learn special terminology. The discipline involves highlighting issues of the written heritage of Arab culture, prerequisites for the formation of the unified Arabic language and writing, Arabic dialectology, the formation and development of the Arabic linguistic tradition, and national grammar schools. The discipline is a part of the complex discipline "Introduction to Philology" and has a theoretical orientation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Learning activities comprise interactive lectures and seminar classes. Self-study of students involves preparation for oral responses, participation in discussions, reports with the analyses of scientific literature, research presentation, precis, summaries.
Assessment methods and criteria
Semestral assessment is based on the oral testing, written assignments, reports and presentations – 36/60 points, modular test papers – 12/20 points, final test paper – 12/20 points. The credit is given based on the results of the student’s work throughout the entire semester and does not require additional assessment measures. Students who scored 60 points, the required minimum, receive “passed”. Students who failed to score 60 points, the required minimum, receive “failed”. Those students who scored totally less than 60 points during the semester period should complete a test paper in the items which he/she failed to pass. Final score 60-100 – passed; 0-59 – failed.
