Learning outcomes
PLO 8. Know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of English and the two studied Western European languages, and literature, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities.
PLO 10. Know the rules of standard language and be able to apply them in practice.
PLO 11. Know the principles, technologies and techniques of oral and written texts of different genres and styles creation in Ukrainian, English and two other Western European languages.
PLO 12. Analyze language units, determine their interaction, and characterize linguistic phenomena and the underlying processes.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
The course is aimed at students who have background knowledge of English and a beginner level of French, have basic linguistic and intercultural communication skills, are able to process language material independently and in a group, possess basic knowledge of modern bibliographic culture and skills of creative and systematic thinking.
Course content
The main aim of the second term of study is to acquire basic knowledge, skills and abilities in phonetics, graphics, spelling, vocabulary and grammar of the French language. The subject of the course is the study of pronunciation and reading rules, acquisition of lexical material and basic grammar categories, practical mastering the French language in oral and written form. At this stage of language learning and the formation of language competences, differentiation of aspects of work, namely: work with a textbook, conversational practice on an offered topic, work with an audio text, acquire special importance; the foundations for the development of translation skills and understanding of a foreign language text are laid; written speech is consolidated in translation and other exercises; conversational practice is based on the wide use of phonetics, which includes recordings of everyday texts, dialogues, and grammar exercises; auditory perception of foreign language audio texts and their reproduction in various forms are aimed at consolidation of pronunciation skills.

Term assessment (max. grade - 60 p. / min. positive grade 36 p.) • answer at the practical class - 9/6 p. • oral report, participation in discussions, presentation - 15/9 p. • written work, essay - 15/ 9 p. • work in creative microgroups (audio, video, graphic materials) – 6/3 p. • tests, module tests – 15/9 p. Final assessment is conducted in the form of a complex exam: Max. point at the exam is 40, minimum (positive grade) is 24 (60% of the max. number of points). The exam is conducted in a combined (written-oral) form. Each part is assessed with 20 points (12 - the minimum for the positive assessment): - written part - 7-4 p. (listening), 6-4 p. (reading and comprehension), 7-4 p. (essay); - oral part - 7-4 p. (theoretical question and text analysis), 6-4 p. (monologic speech), 7-4 p. (dialogic communication).
