Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Successful mastering of the courses Introduction to Literary Studies; History of Foreign Literature (parts 1-7), Fundamentals of Narratological Analysis, Fundamentals of Genre Studies. 2. Knowledge of the methodology of analysing a literary text.
Course content
The course work involves analysing and interpreting literary works based on the methodological apparatus of certain critical approaches; making generalisations and justifying conclusions based on one's own observations. While writing a course paper, students acquire knowledge about the stages of scientific literary research; update, systematise, and deepen the knowledge gained during their studies; develop skills of independent research work; improve the ability to evaluate the phenomena under study from the standpoint of the latest scientific concepts; develop skills of observing the basic rules of scientific certification of material used in the study (quotation marks, citation of the source, its author, title, year and place of publication, etc.); meet the requirements of academic integrity.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Preliminary consultation with a supervisor; selection of specialised literature, drafting a bibliography on the topic of the course paper; formulation of a hypothesis, drafting a research plan, analysis of sources, professional publications, etc.; writing a course paper in accordance with the qualification requirements; presentation and defence of research results. Consultation, independent work, defence.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final mark for the course is formed by the points obtained by students in the process of writing a course paper and during the presentation and defence of research results. The evaluation criteria (min. 6 / max. 10 each) include: 1) Structure of the work. The logic of scientific research; 2) Correlation of the purpose, tasks and conclusions in the work; 3) Independence of the search. Personal contribution of the student; 4) Scientific sources: classical and modern, Ukrainian and foreign; 5) The style compliance. Language competence; 6) The scope of the course paper; 7) Meeting the requirements; 8) Compliance with the deadlines; 9) Presentation of research results; 10) Answers to questions after the presentation: understanding, completeness of the answer, argumentation. The form of final assessment is a differentiated credit.
