Prerequisites and co-requisites
The students are supposed 1) to possess the command of Ukrainian; 2) to have skills to work with scientific literature.
Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to form in students a systematic idea of the leading, defining trends in the development of university studies, to promote the adaptation of 1st year students to study at the university. The course consists of two parts. In the first one students get acquainted with the historiography of the course, the traditions of university education in Ukraine and the world, the circumstances of the founding of St. Vladimir's University in Kiev, the development of scientific schools at Kiev University, training, international cooperation and more. In the second one they get an idea of the formation of philology as a separate scientific field, the umbrella principle of organization of this field, the composition of philological disciplines, subjects, objects and methods of their study; classical paradigms of philological scientific knowledge and formation of new paradigms, personalities of outstanding representatives of various philological directions.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Forms of study consist of lectures, and students’ self-study. Teaching methods include writing test papers, essays and a final test paper.
Assessment methods and criteria
The control of the student's knowledge is carried out according to the modular rating system. The total number of points (100) of the student is formed by semester points obtained during the modular control of written detailed answers to general theoretical questions; points obtained for independent work (for essays); as well as points obtained during the final control (test in the form of testing). Points are accrued according to the following scheme: two tests – 40 points / 24 points; two essays – 40 points / 24 points; Final test – 20/12 points. Students who score a minimum positive score of 60 receive a "credit". Students who do not score the minimum positive number of points - 60, receive - "not credited" and must retake the final test.
