Learning outcomes
PTR 1. To freely communicate in Ukrainian and Russian languages in the professional sphere with specialists and non-specialists orally and in writing, to use those languages for effective intercultural communication organisation. PTR 2. To effectively work with information, i.e. to select the necessary information from various sources, in particular from specialized literature and electronic databases, to critically analyze and interpret them, organize, classify and systematize PTR 7. To understand the main problems of philology and ways to solve them using appropriate methods and innovative approaches. PTR 12. To analyze linguistic units, determine their interaction and characterize linguistic phenomena and processes that determine them.

Course content
The aim of the discipline is to familiarize students with basic linguistic concepts, categories, etc., to form an idea of language as a certain sign system, its structure and features of its units. The course informs about the stages of formation of linguistics, modern varieties of this science and about prominent domestic and foreign linguists. The course of lectures and practical classes contributes to the formation of an idea of language as the most important means of human communication, the functions of language, the relationship between language and society, language and thinking. Language is seen as a special sign system that has a certain structure. Some sections of the course are devoted to describing the features of language units of different levels. The course also introduces the main types of language classification (genealogical and typological). Information is also provided on the types of writing and its history.

Express survey, oral answer, participation in the discussion, written assignments, current CR, ICR. The method of problematic presentation. Explanatory and informational method. Interactive and communicative-activity method (lecture, conversation, survey, discussion). The method of educational discussion. Method of analysis, generalization, systematization of information.
