Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Know: have knowledge of the history of world and Ukrainian education (within the framework of the complete general secondary education program). 2. To be able to: identify, analyze, compare information of historical and cultural nature; analyze own abilities, inclinations, interests. 3. Possess elementary skills: processing a scientific text, systematizing materials necessary for work, effectively organizing their own learning activities.
Course content
The course introduces freshmen to the basic principles, leading trends and stages of development of higher education, including university education, in Ukraine and the world. An analysis and objective assessment of the causes and main historical prerequisites for the emergence of universities in the world is offered. The peculiarities of the influence of world university traditions on the formation of the Ukrainian educational system, the history of the formation of the Ukrainian system of university education, the stages of creation and development of Kyiv University are characterized. The historical processes that influenced Kyiv University throughout its existence are characterized. The history of formation, main stages of development and structure of philological science, as well as the history of philological research at Kyiv University are outlined. The specifics of philological knowledge and the profession of a philologist are characterized. Students will learn about the life, creative activity and scientific heritage of prominent national philologists, the role and place of a philologist in modern society, the organization of the educational process and independent work of a philology student at the university.

Assessment methods and criteria
The discipline consists of three content modules. Assessment of semester work: 1. Testing / express survey: 6 - 10 points. 2. Participation in the discussion: 3 - 5 points. 3. Performing independent tasks: preparation of abstracts / presentations / essays: 15 - 25 points. 4. Presentation / case project: 15 - 25 points. 5. Modular control work №1: 6 - 10 points. 6. Module test № 2: 15 - 25 points.
