Learning outcomes
PLO 16. To know and to understand the basic concepts and categories of Сlassical Philology and the theoretical principles of General Linguistics, to be able to apply them in professional activities. PLO 23. To understand the ideological bases of various theories of the glottogenesis, to describe linguistic universals and typology of languages, to analyze language as an activity, to apply knowledge of various linguistics branches in professional activities.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
To know general information about the nature, structure, functions, universal characteristics of the language, about the types and functions of linguistic units, as well as about the structural and systematic arrangement of the Ancient Greek and Latin languages; to possess elementary skills of research and interpretation of language at all levels of its structure, skills to track the process of cultural and scientific evolution, to practice analysis of philosophical and general scientific literature.
Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to familiarize students with the regularities of the language learning process in Antiquity, with the main philosophical currents, approaches to the explanation of linguistic phenomena, and to reveal the influence of ancient linguistics on the further development of the global process of linguistic phenomenon research. Abstract of the academic discipline. The subject of the discipline is the main stages of the development of linguistics in the countries of the ancient world, ideas about the nature of language, concepts and terms that were formed during the ancient stage of the development of linguistics, the most important discoveries and achievements in the field of linguistics made by ancient scientists. Information is provided about the most famous linguistic schools and traditions of the post-Antique period and modern times, where linguistic and philosophical ideas of ancient science were used.

Assessment methods and criteria
Semester assessment. Knowledge control is carried out according to the ECTS system. The overall grade for the semester consists of the points received for the classroom work and the final test. Assessment of semester work: 1. Oral answer: 1.1-1.5; 2.1-2.4; 3.1-3.3; 4.2, 4.3, 4.5 – 15/25 points; 2. Additions, participation in the discussion: 1.1-1.5; 2.1-2.4; 3.1-3.3; 4.2, 4.3, 4.5 – 6/12 points; 3. Tests; 1.1-1.5; 2.1-2.4; 4.1-4.5 – 8/14 points; 4. Control work: 1.1-1.3; 2.1-2.4; 4.1, 4.5 – 8/12 points; 5. Report-analysis of a linguistic-philosophical work: 1.3-1.5; 2.1-2.4; 3.1, 3.2; 4.1-4.5 – 11/17 points; 6. Final control work of 1.1-1.5; 2.1-2.4; 4.2, 4.4, 4.5 – 12/20 points. Final assessment: a credit.
