PLO 6. Use information and communication technologies to solve complex specialized tasks and issues of professional activity. PLO 7. Understand the major issues of philology and approaches to solving those using relevant methods and innovative approaches. PLO 12. Analyze language units, determine their interaction, and characterize linguistic phenomena and the underlying processes. PLO 16. Know and understand the basic notions, theories and concepts of the chosen philological specialization, be able to apply them in professional activity. PLO 22. Realize the role and place of classical languages and literatures in the context of the European linguistic and cultural space, in the strategies of the development of the contemporary academic paradigm and modern civilization.

Full-time form

Elementary theoretical knowledge of grammar, basic knowledge of the history of the Ancient World, skills of analysis and interpretations of literary texts and works of art.

The aim of the course is to introduce the subject of Classical Philology, including the history of the formation of Classical Philology and the current state of its development. Students will learn interdisciplinary approaches, leading methods of analysis, ways of popularizing ancient material and the skills of using modern references and electronic resources. "Introduction to classical philology" lays the foundation for all further Classical Studies. The course is three credits and has three content parts. The first part "Methodological foundations of Classical Studies" deals with the basic concepts of Classical Philology, its goals and methods of research. The second part "Indo-European and non-Indo-European cultural codes of antiquity" analyses the roots of our ancient heritage. The third part "Antiquity in latter linguistic and cultural environments" is devoted to the nature of language contacts and language borrowings in the Hellenistic-Roman and Byzantine periods.

All the assessments for the semester are combined into a total score of 100 points and 60 points minimum to pass. The overall grade for the semester consists of marks for in-class work and for independent theoretical material for class preparation: oral answers, tests, a presentation of the creative project). Final assessment: a credit. A detailed description of the forms, criteria and organization of assessment is given in the working course program, published on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
