Prerequisites and co-requisites
The discipline "Coordination Chemistry" is based on the knowledge gained during the study of courses "General Chemistry", "Inorganic Chemistry", "Quantum Chemistry", and, in turn, is the basis for studying courses such as: "Spectroscopy of inorganic compounds", "Physical methods of research of inorganic compounds" "Bioinorganic chemistry", as well as necessary for students in the performance and writing of theses, the topics of which are related to the synthesis and study of coordination compounds.
Course content
The program of the course "Coordination Chemistry" includes a review of theories of coordination from the basic tenets of Werner's theory to modern views from the standpoint of ligand field theory. The introductory section is devoted to the material on the classification and nomenclature of coordination compounds. The simplest methods of detection of the inner sphere and extraspherical ions in coordination compounds, classification of ligands, their dentition are considered. Attention is paid to the concept of coordination number, its spatial interpretation, as well as factors that affect the value of the coordination number. The issues of the kinetics of the complexation reaction, the division into inert and labile complexes, and the mechanisms of ligand substitution reactions are discussed. Attention is also paid to the practical use of coordination compounds.
