Learning outcomes
PLO 7. To analyze, compare and classify different trends and schools in Linguistics.
PLO 9. To characterize theoretical principles (concepts, categories, principles, basic concepts, etc.) and applied aspects of the chosen linguistic specialization.
PLO 13. To explain the essence of both specific linguistic issues and one’s point of view and its justification to experts and laypeople in an accessible and argumentative manner, particularly to individuals who are studying.
PLO 16. To use specialized conceptual knowledge in a chosen linguistic field to solve complex tasks and issues, which require updates and integration of knowledge, often under conditions of incomplete or lacking information and contradictory requirements.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
English B2-C1, knowledge of the basic linguistic terms and categories, principles of linguistic analysis, semantics and vocabulary, English word-formation, functioning of English in modern communication; ability to use linguistic terms, to collect, analyse and interpret linguistically language and communication facts; ability to discuss linguistic issues.
Course content
The course spans a wide range of issues of Theory of English, its evolution, up to its modern status of a global language, language of cross-cultural communication, the most promising and fruitful trends of the English language studies such as social linguistics, eco-linguistics, experimental phonetics, corpus linguistics, linguistic landscape, multimodality, discourse analysis. The students are offered the assignments to implement and develop creativity, analytical approach, multimodal and multisemiotic skills, linguistic analysis, interpretation of language data.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Learning activities: lectures, seminars, independent work. Teaching methods: Explanatory and illustrative method, method of problem-based learning (problem lecture), research method, preparation and discussion of presentations based on the results of scientific research, scientific discussions, independent work of students.
Assessment methods and criteria
Current assessment: oral response, test, presentation (report), review of tasks for independent work. Final evaluation - credit. Evaluation criteria for each form of control are given in the course program.
