General provisions of crystal optics
Methods of determining the crystal-optical characteristics of minerals in thin sections
Be able;
Describe and identify minerals in hin sections
Describe and define the name of an igneous rock
Describe and define the name of a metamorphic rock
Describe and define the name of a sedimentary rock
Determine the composition and features of the structure of rocks
Be able to determine the microstructure of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks
Genetic conclusions can be made based on the results of studies of minerals in the hin sections and micro-structural features of the rocks
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful completion of the "Fundamentals of petrography" course
Knowledge of the main rock-forming minerals and their physical properties
Course content
While writing the course work, students learn to use in practice the acquired theoretical knowledge of the basics of crystal optics and the practical use of a polarizing microscope for the study of rocks. The main task of the discipline is to master the methods of diagnosing minerals in thin sections, to determine the peculiarities of the structure of rocks and their mineral composition, as well as to draw conclusions about the conditions of formation and further transformation of rocks.
