Learning outcomes
PLO 1 Communicate fluently in English on professional issues with specialists and non-specialists, use English for the organization of effective intercultural communication. PLO 3 Organize the process of learning and self-education. PLO 7 Understand the main issues of philology and approaches to their solution using appropriate methods and innovative approaches. PLO 15 Carry out linguistic and literary analysis of the texts of various styles and genres. PLO 16 Know and understand the basic concepts and theories of the chosen philological specialization, be able to apply them in professional activity. PLO 17 Collect, analyze, systematize and interpret language and speech facts and use them to solve complex tasks and issues in specialized areas of professional activities and/or study.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1) successful mastering of the courses "Modern Ukrainian Language. Part 1", "Fundamentals of Literature Studies" and "History of Ukrainian Literature. Part 1"; 2) knowledge of the theoretical foundations of the professional discipline - general linguistic concepts, general information about the historical and cultural context of the modern language policy of Ukraine, the basics of literary terminology, the peculiarities of the development of Ukrainian and foreign literature, the basics of Latin grammar; 3) basic skills of translation from a foreign language into Ukrainian, skills of literary analysis and interpretation of works of art, orientation in the Ukrainian and world historical and cultural process.
Course content
The aim of the course is to cultivate students' understanding of fundamental principles in language theory, equipping them with the ability to apply these principles in the analysis of specific linguistic phenomena across various world languages. The course aims to develop students' proficiency in articulating conceptual explanations both verbally and in written form, using a linguistic terminological framework. Additionally, it tends to familiarize students with the methods and techniques employed in researching linguistic phenomena. The discipline is structured to introduce students to foundational knowledge in linguistics, encompassing general linguistic principles, theories, and key methods for researching the intricate phenomenon of language. The introductory nature of the course underscores the importance of three interrelated components: language theory, methods and techniques of linguistic research, and the historical evolution of linguistic science.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Educational activities: verbal response, essay/report/presentation with slides, written work (text analysis), final test, exam. Teaching methods: lectures, practical sessions, independent work.
Assessment methods and criteria
Answers during pracrical classes - 1 min/2 max; intermediate express control works - 4 min/6 max; abstract - 4 min/5 max; creative task - 3 min/5 maz, final test - 7 min/12 max; Form of final control – the credit: 60 min / 100 max. Grading scale: ""Pass"" - 60-100 ""Fail"" - 0-59 The pass grade is given based on the student's performance throughout the semester and does not presuppose additional assesment.
