Learning outcomes
PLO 1. To communicate freely on professional issues with experts and non-experts in the Ukrainian and foreign languages, in oral and in written form, to use these languages in irder to organize effective cross-cultural communication. PLO 7. To understand the major issues of philology and the ways to solve them using relevant methods and innovative approaches. PLO 8. To know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of the English language and literature, to be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 12. To analyze language units, to determine their interaction, and characterize linguistic phenomena and the underlying processes. PLO 17. To collect, analyze, systematize and interpret language and speech facts and use them to solve complex tasks and problems in specialized fields of professional activity and / or training

Prerequisites and co-requisites
The program is designed for students who have studied English in secondary school and have successfully mastered the previous components of this discipline at university. The student is supposed to
know:
• basic linguistic terms;
• principles of linguistic analysis;
• semantics and functioning principles of units on all levels;
be capable of:
• communicating in English (B2 level)
• appling linguistic tools;
have basic skills of:
• selecting, analysing and interpreting speech units;
• communicating on linguistic issues.
Course content
The aim of the discipline is to train highly qualified specialists in philology, English language teachers for higher institutions and secondary schools as well as to form linguistic and methodological skills and abilities necessary for future foreign language teachers, to broaden the students’ worldview, to improve their theoretical and methodological skills. Considerable attention is paid to the formation of students’ understanding of the peculiarities of various communicative situations, providing students with tools for modeling various communicative situations, increasing their level of competence in 4 types of speech activity, and developing their communicative competence.
The basic teaching principle is the communicative approach to learning a foreign language with the use of authentic materials and real communicative situations modeling. The curriculum includes practical classes and students’ independent work.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The curriculum includes such activities during the semester:
• tests on target vocabulary and grammar
• listening tasks
• making up dialogues and participation in discussions
• reports / presentations
• writing essays
Assessment methods and criteria
Semester assessment:
• the maximum number of points during the semester is 75 points:
• vocabulary and grammar tests: LO 1.3 – 25 points
• listening tasks: LO 1.2 – 8 points
• dialogues / discussions: LO 3 – 20 points
• reports / presentations: LO 2.3, LO 3 – 12 points
• writing works: LO 2.3 – 10 points
Final assessment: credit
• the maximum number of points during the credit assessment is 25 points, the minimum number of points (positive assessment) that are added to the semester ones is 15 points (60% of the maximum number of points assigned to the assessment);
• the following learning outcomes are evaluated on the test: LO 1.1, 1.3; LO 2.1, LO 3.
• assessment is carried out in a mixed form:
1. Written presentation of a grammatical question (LO 1.3).
2. Written linguistic analysis of an unknown English-language text on the topic covered and translation of its passage (LO 1.1, LO 1.3, LO 2.1).
3. An interview on one of the lexical topics passed (LO 3).
