Learning outcomes
PLO 8. To know and understand the language system, the general properties of literature as an art of speech, the history of the Persian language and literature, and to be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 9. To characterize the dialectal and social varieties of the Persian languages, describe the sociolinguistic situation. PLO 22. To have basic knowledge of the Arabic language.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful mastering of the discipline "Basics of Linguistics"; knowledge of Arabic graphics, grammatical terminology of the Ukrainian language, basics of one of Western European languages.
Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to provide the students of Iranian Studies with basic knowledge of the Arabic language, namely: to teach Arabic phonetics, to develop the skills of reading and writing in Arabic, to familiarize with the basics of normative Arabic grammar, and a basic vocabulary; to form students’ communicative competences in four types of speech activity of the Arabic language. The discipline belongs to the block of disciplines of the student's free choice and has a practical direction.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Practical lessons in the Arabic language provide the formation of phonetic, lexical and grammatical skills of the students of Iranian Studies in the process of active work in the classroom. Control of students’ mastering lexical and grammatical material is carried out via oral communication and written tasks, tests, lexical dictations, and modular control works. Homework and translation exercises are mandatory.
Assessment methods and criteria
Semestral assessment is based on the oral testing, written assignments, translation exercises – 36/60 points, modular test papers – 24/40 points, final test paper – 12/20 points. The credit is given based on the results of the student’s work throughout the entire semester and does not include additional assessment measures. Students who scored 60 points, the required minimum, receive “passed”. Students who failed to score 60 points, the required minimum, receive “failed”. Those students who scored totally less than 60 points during the semester period should complete a test paper in the items which he/she failed to pass. Final score 60-100 – passed; 0-59 – failed.
