Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites and performance requirements To complete the course requirements, students should be proficient in English at levels B1+ -B2. This level suggests the ability to understand the gist of texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including discussions on technology-related texts; converse with native speakers with fluency and spontaneity that are appropriate for both interlocutors; express their thoughts on a broad range of topics and issues, clearly and in full detail, providing appropriate arguments and counter-arguments; have elementary skills of constructing presentations, implementing scientific research and enhancement of study strategies. Course content
Course Description: The course aims to build and further develop students’ communicative competence in English to enable the effective solution of profession-oriented tasks in natural science and mathematics, particularly in oral and written profession-oriented communication. The course is comprised of six modules. Modules 1-4 (Terms V and VI) examine the topics related to the goal, objectives, and major concepts of sciences-oriented communication. In Modules 5-6 (Term VII), students are enabled to discuss the global problems of humankind, their causes, and the ways to overcome them. The course ends with an examination.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The course is delivered in English. It combines such formats of instruction as practical sessions, independent and project work. The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are answers at practical sessions, project work, and a module test paper. For the performance in these activities, a student can score max. 60 and min. 36 points. A detailed description of activities and formative assessment is presented in the course curriculum posted on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment The term total score is based on the 100-point grading scheme. It is composed of the scores earned during the coursework in the term (maximum 60 points, minimum 36 points) and the scores for the summative assessment – exam (maximum 40 points, minimum 24 points). Formative assessment includes answers at practical sessions (20 points), project work (20 points), and a module test paper (20 points). Summative assessment is an exam consisting of two tasks: a written task (30 points) and an oral task (discussion of a topic) (10 points).
