PLO 5. Make use of major professional concepts and appropriate terminology. PLO 13. Know modern philological and pedagogical foundations of teaching Ukrainian language and literature, language norms, the socio-cultural development of the Ukrainian language, the use of language units in a certain context, language discourse of fiction and modernity, leading trends in the development of the literary process in Ukraine. PLO 14. Explain the particularities of the development of the Ukrainian language and literature, the specifics and cultural context of the Ukrainian literary process, the concepts of aesthetic theories, methods, trends, styles, and genres; Ukrainian classic and modern literature in relation to the world literature and culture; compare linguistic and literary facts and phenomena, identify their similarities and differences. Successful performance in the course builds on the knowledge acquired in such courses as Introduction to literary studies, Ancient Literature, Literature of the XIX Century, Literature of the Second Half of the XIX Century, Literature of the late XIX - early XX centuries, Literature of the First Half of the XX century, and Literature of the Second Half of the XX century. Students are also expected to know the basics of literary analysis of works of fiction, the periodization of the literary process in the Ukrainian literature of the 20th century; the main features of styles and trends of the 20th century’s literature and art; to have elementary skills to identify the genre and stylistic features of the analyzed text, its subject, and problematics; to classify literary works by subject, problematics, genre, and stylistic features; to be able to distinguish problematics and themes of a literary movement; systematize literary facts and phenomena, evaluate them objectively.

Course description The course aims to equip students with knowledge of the major aesthetic trends of the Ukrainian literature of the late 20th and early 21st century within the context of the world literary process, enhance students’ skills of analyzing literary works and presenting the findings of their own research. The course contains one module which focuses on the trends in the development of poetry, prose, drama, literary criticism and essays from the 1980s up to the first decades of the 21st century. The course also aims to systematize and recapitulate students’ knowledge about postmodernism, the global trends in the modern literary process, and multimedia impact on them, etc. The summative assessment is an examination.

Classroom activities and teaching techniques The course combines such formats of instruction as lectures, practical sessions, and independent work. The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are answers at practical sessions, creative tasks, and a module test paper. For the performance in these activities, a student can score max. 60 and min. 36 points. Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system. It is made up of the scores for the coursework during a term (max. 60, min. 36 points) and the scores earned during the exam (max. 40, min. 24 points). The formative assessment considers answers at practical sessions (20 points), creative tasks (20 points), and a module test paper (20 points). The summative assessment is a written exam. The exam card contains two questions: a theoretical question on the history of Ukrainian literature of the late 20th – early 21st century (50%); a practical assignment (analysis of a literary work) (50%).
