Prerequisites and performance requirements
Successful performance in this course builds on prior knowledge acquired through the courses comprising the integrated discipline “Modern Ukrainian language”, such as “Lexicology. Phraseology”, “Phonetics”, “Studies of morphemes and morphs. Word building”, “Studies of grammatical paradigms”. Students are expected to possess: essential knowledge of the basic concepts of the syntax of Modern Ukrainian; the ability to analyze grammatical units at the phrasemic level; the ability to provide a syntactic analysis of a simple sentence and do modeling of syntactic structures based on the relationships between words.

Course description
The course aims to equip students with the knowledge of the syntax of a compound and complex sentence, traditional and innovative views on the structure and semantics of a compound and complex sentence; build students’ ability to apply the acquired knowledge in practice while providing a syntactical analysis of sentences. The course is comprised of one module which focuses on the main concepts of syntax, on the typological, structural, and semantic characteristics of a compound and complex sentence, in particular. The course also considers a complex sentence with an undifferentiated syntactic connection and a non-elementary complex sentence (syntactic analysis). The course ends with an examination.

Classroom activities and teaching techniques
The course integrates such forms of instruction as practical sessions and independent work. The major activities the students are engaged in and further assessed are answers at practical sessions, additions to answers, tests, and a module test pater. The total score for these performances is a maximum of 60 points and a minimum of 36 points. A detailed account of all criteria to assess teaching/learning activities in the course is presented in the course curriculum posted on the website of Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology. The course ends with an examination
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment
The term total score is based on the 100-point grading scheme. It is composed of the scores earned during the coursework in the term (maximum 60 points, minimum 36 points) and the scores for the summative assessment – exam (maximum 40 points, minimum 24 points). Formative assessment includes answers at practical sessions (24 points), additions (12 points), tests (10 points), and a module test paper (14 points). Summative assessment is a written exam consisting of two tasks: a question on the theory of the syntax of a compound and complex sentence and a practical assignment (a syntactical analysis of a simple sentence). Each task is allotted a maximum of 10 points.
