To successfully master the course content, students are expected to know foreign language pedagogy in general as well as its special branches; specifics of pedagogical discourse; a repertoire of a foreign language teacher’s strategies and tactics, methods, and techniques of teaching English in secondary school; methodology of conducting optional and special courses of English as a second language; know how to design a course of English within curricula, plans, textbooks; use methods and techniques in a variety of teaching forms implemented in educational settings; tackle psychological and psycholinguistic difficulties of learning English as a second language; predict areas of interlanguage interference; develop lesson plans and conduct classes and extra-curricular activities of English as a second language in basic secondary school; work with gifted children in basic school.
Course content
Course description
The course aims to develop students’ teaching competence that integrates knowledge about and skills in planning and organizing the process of teaching/learning English in primary school. The course explores the psychological specificity of developing the communicative competence of young learners (grades 1-4), psychological, physiological, and psycholinguistic fundamentals of teaching foreign languages to young learners, as well as methods of teaching all communicative language skills in primary school. The course is delivered in Term V covering 4 ECTS credits (28 contact hours of lectures, 28 contact hours of practical sessions, and 64 hours of independent study). The course is comprised of two content modules and 2 module tests. The course ends in a summative assessment - an exam.

Classroom activities and teaching techniques
The course is delivered in Ukrainian. It integrates such forms of delivery as lectures, practical sessions, independent work, and project work. The major activities the students are engaged in and further assessed are classroom discussion, a team/individual project, and a module test paper. For completing the listed activities, a student can earn a maximum of 60 and a minimum of 36 points. A detailed description of the assessment criteria of the coursework is presented in the course syllabus made public on the website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology. The course leads to an examination focused on PLO 1. 1-4, 2.1.-2.4, and 3.2.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment
A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system, it is made up of the scores earned for the course performance during the term (max. 60, min. 36 points) and the scores gained for summative assessment (exam) (max. 40, min. 24 points). Formative assessment during a term envisages the accumulation of the scores earned for in-class performance (20 points), module test papers (20 points and project work (20 points). The exam is conducted in writing; it envisages extended answers to 4 questions, including 2 theory-related, 1 integrating theory and practice, as well as completing a practical assignment. Each question is worth 10 points.
