Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites and performance requirements To succeed in studying the course, students are expected to have prior knowledge of such courses as “The Ukrainian language”, “History of the Ukrainian language”, and “Practicum in Ukrainian orthography”. Students are also expected to know the system of Ukrainian and the history of its development; be able to be orthographically correct in writing, use oral and written Ukrainian with precision and accuracy; have a grasp of stylistic and compositional features of genres in Ukrainian; be able to use literary Ukrainian in the domains of everyday, professional and official communication.
Course content
Course Description The course aims at enhancing students’ linguistic general competence, accuracy, and communicative competence. It also provides hands-on acquisition of the basics of official, scientific, and everyday styles of communication in Ukrainian to enable professional communication at an appropriate level; develops profession-oriented communication skills in literary Ukrainian; develops students’ humanistic outlook, general culture, and aesthetic tastes. The course is comprised of two modules. Module 1 explores the key concepts and relationships between language and culture. Module 2 focuses on the strategies, means, and particularities of oral and written communication. The course ends with an exam.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The course combines such formats of instruction as lectures, practical sessions, and independent work. The major activities that engage students and further provide evidence to assess their performance are answers at practical sessions and a module test paper. For the performance in these activities, a student can earn max. 60 and a minimum of 36 points. A detailed description of the criteria to assess all activities during a term is presented in the curriculum of the course posted on the website of Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment The course total score is based on the 100-point grade, it is made up of the scores earned for the performance during the term (max. 60, min. 36 points) and the scores for summative assessment – exam (maximum 40 points, minimum 24 points). Formative assessment includes answers at practical sessions (36 points), and a module test paper (24 points). The summative assessment is a written exam consisting of four tasks. Each task is allotted max. 10 points.
