Learning outcomes
PLO 5. Make use of major professional concepts and appropriate terminology. PLO 13. Know modern philological and pedagogical foundations of teaching Ukrainian language and literature, language norms, the socio-cultural development of the Ukrainian language, the use of language units in a certain context, language discourse of fiction and modernity, leading trends in the development of the literary process in Ukraine. PLO 14. Explain the particularities of the development of the Ukrainian language and literature, the specifics and cultural context of the Ukrainian literary process, the concepts of aesthetic theories, methods, trends, styles, and genres; Ukrainian classic and modern literature in relation to the world literature and culture; compare linguistic and literary facts and phenomena, identify their similarities and differences. Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful performance in the course builds on the knowledge acquired in such courses as “History of Ukrainian literature. Part 1. Introduction to literary studies”, “History of Ukrainian Literature. Part 2. Ancient Literature”, “History of Ukrainian Literature. Part 3. Literature of the First Half of the XIX Century”. Students are also expected to have basic factual knowledge of the humanities, the basics of literary text analysis, periodization of the literary process in the 19th century, ideological-aesthetic and socio-political factors influencing the literature of this period; possess elementary skills of research and information management, critical attitude to the analyzed phenomena, use of professional foreign language sources of information, identification of genre and style features of a literary text; to be able to obtain and interpret information about the phenomena of the history of literature, to determine problem-thematic features of a literary work.
Course content
Course description The course aims to build students’ research competence and higher awareness of the trends of the literary process development in the second half of the 19th century. The course contains one module which focuses on the study of issues and trends in the development of the Ukrainian literature; particularities of genre, style, and themes of prose, poetry, drama, and literary criticism in the 50s-90s of the 19th century; the features of Ukrainian romanticism, realism, naturalism, modernism; thematic innovation and innovation in the field of poetics introduced by the classics of Ukrainian literature; critical works of Ukrainian literary critics whose methodology is consistent with the leading trends of world criticism. The discipline ends in a pass/fail credit.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
. Classroom activities and teaching techniques The course combines such formats of instruction as lectures, practical sessions, problem-based learning, and independent and project work. The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are answers at practical sessions, creative tasks, team/individual projects, and a module test paper. For the performance in these activities, a student can score max. 60 and min. 36 points. A detailed description of activities and formative assessment is presented in the course curriculum posted on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system. The total score is made up of the scores earned for the performance during the term (max. 100, min. 60 points). The formative assessment considers answers at practical sessions (45 points), creative tasks (24 points) a creative project (11 points), and a module test paper (20 points). A ‘Pass/fail’ assessment is based on the outcomes of the coursework during the term and does not involve any additional assessment events. To succeed in the pass/fail assessment, students are required to gain a passing grade of 60; students fail if the score is below 60.
