PLO 5. Make use of major professional concepts and appropriate terminology. PLO 13. Know modern philological and pedagogical foundations of teaching Ukrainian language and literature, language norms, the socio-cultural development of the Ukrainian language, the use of language units in a certain context, language discourse of fiction and modernity, leading trends in the development of the literary process in Ukraine. Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful performance in the course builds on prior knowledge acquired through the courses, such as “Modern Ukrainian language” (phrasemic level): “Lexicology. Phraseology”, “Phonetics”, Studies of morphemes and morphs. Derivation”, as well as theoretical basics of general linguistics. Students are also expected to know the major concepts of linguistics; distinguish authentic and credible information; be able to use interactive and multimedia tools; utilize the acquired knowledge and skills while identifying parts of speech and describing their paradigms; have elementary research skills to apply in the analysis of paradigms; be able to process relevant profession-related literature; possess skills of phonological notation of word forms; be able to do derivational and morphemic analysis; be able to do the componential and semasiological analysis of words.
Course content
Course description
The course aims to equip students with a system of knowledge, basic and controversial concepts of traditional morphology, studies of grammatical paradigms, and theoretical grammar. The course is composed of three parts that examine 1) the basics of grammatical paradigms studies including the knowledge of terminology, major grammatical categories as well as approaches to distinguishing parts of speech; 2) nominal parts of speech envisaging the study of features of parts of speech, lexico-grammatical and grammatical categories, paradigmatic types of the noun, adjective, numeral, and pronoun; 3) the verb including the study of features of the verb as a part of speech, grammatical and cross-level categories. Classroom activities and teaching techniques
The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are answers at practical sessions, additions, a progress test, and an individual test paper. For the performance in these activities, a student can score max. 60 and min. 36 points. A detailed description of activities and formative assessment is presented in the course curriculum presented on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment
A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system. It is made up of the scores for the coursework during a term (max. 60, min. 36 points) and the scores earned during the exam (max. 40, min. 24 points). The formative assessment considers answers at practical sessions (20 points), additions (10 points), progress tests (20 points), and an individual test paper (10 points). The summative assessment is a written exam that consists of a test and a written assignment (morphological analysis of three word- forms).
