Prerequisites and performance requirements
Students are expected to have knowledge of the main periods of science evolution and the corresponding scientific images of the world, major trends of the current scientific revolution, revisited modern physical, cosmological, and biological concepts; to be able to distinguish between scientific, manifest, and pseudo-scientific images of the world, make use of modern scientific and philosophical terminology for the general description of the natural world, apply general theoretical and methodological principles in research activity.
Course content
Course description
The course aims at building students' knowledge about the evolution of the scientific image of the world, as well as at shaping students’ scientific worldviews and developing their theoretical thinking and the ability to analyze natural phenomena. The course consists of 2 modules and ends with a pass/fail test. Module 1 examines the role of science in society, the basic features of scientific knowledge, as well as the characteristics of natural sciences and humanities. Module 2 focuses on the history of the evolution of science from ancient times to the present.

Classroom activities and teaching techniques
The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance include 6 classroom tests, a presentation, and an end-of-course module test. A student can score max. 100 and min. 60 points for the performance in these activities, A detailed description of the activities and formative assessment criteria is presented in the course curriculum made public on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment
A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system, a pass/fail assessment score is made up of the scores earned for the performance during the term (max. 100, min. 60 points) and does not involve any additional assessment events. The end-of-course assessment score is the sum of points earned for classroom tests (72 points), a presentation (12 points), and an end-of-course module test (16 points). To succeed in the pass/fail assessment, students are required to gain a passing grade of 60; students fail if the score is below 60.
