Programme Learning Outcomes PLO 5. Make use of major professional concepts and appropriate terminology. PLO 13. Know modern philological and pedagogical foundations of teaching Ukrainian language and literature, language norms, the socio-cultural development of the Ukrainian language, the use of language units in a certain context, language discourse of fiction and modernity, leading trends in the development of the literary process in Ukraine. PLO 14. Explain the particularities of the development of the Ukrainian language and literature, the specifics and cultural context of the Ukrainian literary process, the concepts of aesthetic theories, methods, trends, styles, and genres; Ukrainian classic and modern literature in relation to the world literature and culture; compare linguistic and literary facts and phenomena, identify their similarities and differences. Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites and performance requirements Successful performance in the course builds on the knowledge of such courses as “History of Ukrainian literature. Part 1. Introduction to literary studies” and “Oral folk arts”. Students are also expected to be familiar with literary works written in the 10th-15th centuries, know how to analyze them and understand their place in academic literature, the existing periodizations of medieval and baroque Ukrainian literature, the place of medieval and baroque Ukrainian literature in European literature; to have elementary skills of text analysis, analysis of scientific works in the field, classifying texts; to be able to analyze texts of sources dated to the 10th-15th centuries, critically evaluate scientific works on them, systematize historical and literary facts and phenomena, objectively evaluate them, analyze genre and stylistic features of texts; apply the acquired knowledge in practice.
Course content
Course description The course consists of 1 module which focuses on the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Ukrainian literature in the context of European literature, the methodology of studying literature, periodization, pre-Christian literary works, cultural features of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque eras, the ideological and thematic focus of the times and their place in the system of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque, the specifics of translated literature and oratorical prose of the Early Middle Ages and Baroque, the genre of teaching in the system of ancient written monuments of the time. The Age of the Middle Ages envisages the study of works dated to the High and Late Middle Ages. The Renaissance literature (16th century) in the European context is also considered. Attention is paid to Ukrainian literature of the Baroque era (the 17th -18th centuries), its trends and styles, and the influence of the European Baroque on Ukrainian writing. The course ends with an exam.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The course combines such formats of instruction as lectures, practical sessions, and independent work. The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are answers at practical sessions, creative tasks, creative projects, and a module test paper. For the performance in these activities, a student can score max. 60 and min. 36 points. A detailed description of activities and formative assessment is presented in the course curriculum posted on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system. It is made up of the scores for the coursework during a term (max. 60, min. 36 points) and the scores earned during the exam (max. 40, min. 24 points). The formative assessment considers answers at practical sessions (20 points), creative tasks (14 points), creative projects (14 points), and a module test paper (12 points). The summative assessment is a written exam. The exam card contains two questions: a theoretical question on the history of Ukrainian literature in the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque eras (50%); a practical assignment (analysis of a literary work) (50%).
