Programme Learning Outcomes:
PLO 1. Know the historical stages of the development of the subject area. PLO 5. Make use of major professional concepts and appropriate terminology. PLO 14. Explain the particularities of the development of the Ukrainian language and literature, the specifics and cultural context of the Ukrainian literary process, the concepts of aesthetic theories, methods, trends, styles, and genres; Ukrainian classic and modern literature in relation to the world literature and culture; compare linguistic and literary facts and phenomena, identify their similarities and differences. PLO 17. Be able to work with theoretical and research sources (in particular, digital), search for, process, systematize, and use updated information, bibliography, and computer technologies in educational activities. Prerequisites and performance requirements
To successfully complete the course, students are required to have prior knowledge of such courses as “Introduction to university studies”, and “The modern Ukrainian language”. Students are also required to know the theoretical foundations of linguistics, and historical developments in the areas of phonetics, grammar, and lexicology of Ukrainian, and modern Ukrainian. Students are expected to have skills in the analysis of language phenomena, in particular, be able to characterize historic changes; comparison and contrast changes in time and spatial dimensions. Students are required to be able to apply the knowledge about the changeability of language phenomena and their functions while doing the linguistic analysis of a variety of text genres in diachronic dimensions; be able to transcribe texts and work with dictionaries.
Course content
Course description
The multi-term course “History of Ukrainian” offers the study of the history of literary Ukrainian and its dialects; it aims to enable the application of historic linguistics in the teaching/learning of Ukrainian in secondary educational establishments. Part One of the course explores periodization, terminology, sources of study, and sources of development of the history of the literary Ukrainian language, as well as the characteristics of literary language norms and stylistic differentiation in diachrony. Part Two studies Ukrainian dialects focusing on the concepts “dialect”, variability and territorial differentiation, the history of the development of linguistic and territorial phenomena and discreet linguistic phenomena, and the relationship and interaction with other existing forms of the language of the ethnos. The discipline is taught in I and II semesters, each of which ends in a pass/fail credit.

Classroom activities and teaching techniques
The course is taught within two terms combining such formats of instruction as lectures, practical sessions, and independent work. The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are practical assignments, writing research papers (literature review) and presenting them, a module test paper, and a course paper. For the performance in these activities in the second term, a student can score max. 100 and min. 60 points. Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment
The term total score is based on the 100-point grading scheme. It is composed of the scores earned during the coursework in the term (maximum 100 points, minimum 60 points). Formative assessment includes answers at practical sessions (max 40, min. 24), presentation of a literature review (max 20, min 12), tests (max. 20, min. 12 points), and a module test paper (max. 20, min. 12 points).
