Program Learning Outcomes PLO 16.1. Know grammatical and linguo-stylistic features of English of media and fiction, use a foreign (English) language of media and fiction in professional activities. PLO Аu. 2. Be able to recognize the importance of lifelong learning with the aim of increasing the acquired knowledge and gaining new professional knowledge to enhance personal development skills and to effectively organize the educational process. Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful performance in this course builds on prior knowledge and language skills acquired through the courses such as ‘English for intercultural communication’ and ‘English for academic and business purposes’ (English level B2). Course participants are expected to possess essential knowledge of basic registers of English as well as textual genres. The course prerequisites also emphasize critical thinking skills and the ability to evaluate the information sources used for solving educational/ professional problems; analyze, compare/ contrast language phenomena at a sentence, paragraph, or text level; decode the author's intentions by analyzing the rhetoric and language of a text; provide a rhetorical analysis of English fictional and non-fictional texts; follow genre conventions while producing various text types in English.
Course content
This course aims to enhance social, cultural, and language competencies as well as higher-order cognitive skills – analysis, synthesis, and critical thinking – through reading English media and fictional texts. The instruction is targeted at building systematic knowledge about the language, rhetoric, and style of such texts as well as at equipping students with best practices and skills of academic/analytical writing based on reading various text types of media/fictional discourse. The course is divided into 3 content modules. Module 1 treats genre characteristics of fictional texts; Module 2 focuses on critical reading of media texts; Module 3 provides training in academic writing based on reading various text genres of media/fictional texts. The course ends with an exam.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is delivered in English through a mixture of practical sessions, independent learning, research, and project work. Major activities performed by students include classroom discussions, creative assignment, individual/group projects, essay and module tests (stylistic analysis of the text). A student can score a maximum of 60 points and a minimum of 36 points for these activities that are components of formative assessment. The course ends with an exam.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final course grade is a sum of the points earned for the formative assessment (a student can score a maximum of 60 and a minimum of 36 points for these activities that are components of formative assessment) and summative assessment (max – 40; min – 24). Formative assessment is targeted at classroom discussions (18 p.), creative assignments (15 p.), individual/group projects (4 p.), an essay (8 p.) and module tests (15 p.). Summative assessment is an exam that integrates 2 writing assignments (stylistic analysis of the text - 15 points; a language focus task – 10 points) and an oral interview (discussion of a theoretical topic on stylistics/ theory of text – 15 points). The exam is designed to cover the intended learning outcomes (LO) of the course such as LO 1.1-1.5, 2.1-2.3, 4.1.
