Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful performance in this course builds on prior knowledge of the history and literary periods of Ukrainian literature acquired within Bachelor programme, and basic terminology and frameworks in literature. Moreover, the course prerequisites emphasize students’ ability to properly use basic literary concepts and terms; to apply critical thinking skills and express personal opinion orally and in a written form; to analyse literary texts and give them critical evaluation. The students are also required to be able to apply their expertise in literary theories to the analysis of works of literature in order to identify literary phenomena; to classify and categorise literature texts according to the subject matter, genre and style, highlighting their salient features.
Course content
This course aims to build knowledge on the main ideological strategies and trends, figurative, stylistic and aesthetic aspects of the development of the Ukrainian literature in the 19th – 20th centuries; to promote students’ professional training in understanding the nuance of Ukrainian literature through its literary analysis and interpretation, highlighting ideological and political context of the era and world trends.
The course focuses on several content areas:
- the main literary periods of Ukrainian mainland and emigration literature development in the 19th – 20th centuries in the context of confrontation or interaction of national and aesthetic norms;
- the influence of literature on the development of colonial, anti-colonial, postcolonial discourses and images of Ukrainians in them;
- styles in the Ukrainian literature of the 19th – 20th centuries (sentimentalism, classicism, realism, romanticism, modernism, avant-garde, postmodernism);
- ideologically unbiased interpretation of Ukrainian literature, literature canons and principles.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is delivered in Ukrainian through a mixture of lectures, practical sessions, independent learning, research, and project work. Major activities performed by the students include classroom discussions, individual assignment/presentations, a creative project and module tests. A student can score a maximum of 60 points and a minimum of 36 points for these activities that are components of formative assessment. A detailed description of formative assessment is presented in the course description made public on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology. Summative essessment takes the form of an exam.
Assessment methods and criteria
With a 100-point assessment system used, a final grade for the course is a sum of the points earned for the formative assessment (max – 60; min - 36) and summative assessment (max – 40; min – 24). Formative assessment is targeted at classroom performance (max. 20 points, min. 10 points), individual assignment / presentation (max. 11 points, min. 7 points), a project (max. 11 points, min. 7 points) completed as independent learning task and module tests (max. 18 points, min. 12 points). Summative assessment is an exam that integrates writing assignments (giving answers to the questions which concern broad theoretical areas of the sublect as well as the plots of particular literary works). The exam is designed to cover the intended learning outcomes (LO) of the course such as LO 1.1-1.5; LO 2.1-2.3, LO 3.2.
