            Prerequisites and co-requisites
        
        
            Successful performance in this course requires that students have English language proficiency at the B2/ B2+ level. Course participants are also expected to possess essential knowledge of English as a language system and a communication tool; basic registers of English as well as textual genres; principles of intercultural communication. The course prerequisites also emphasize critical thinking skills and the ability to analyse, compare/ contrast language phenomena at a sentence, paragraph, or text level; evaluate the information sources used for solving educational/ professional problems; decode the author's intentions by analysing the rhetoric and language of a text; follow genre conventions while producing various text types in English; do and present educational projects and work in teams, have basic internet research skills; develop critical attitude in evaluating information; use a variety of information resources.
        
    
            Course content
        
        
            This course aims to foster the skills of effective business/academic communication in an English classroom by making students aware of major communication theories; building systematic knowledge about discourse as well as rhetoric in academic/business discourse; equipping students with best practices and skills for using language and rhetoric in academic/business communication. The course examines academic/business discourse and communication with an emphasis on critical reading, rhetorical analysis as well as production of various text types of academic/business discourse. The course is divided into 4 content modules. Module 1 treats theoretical aspects of academic communication; Module 2 focuses on the rhetoric of this communication; Module 3 examines the process of business communication; Module 4 provides training in producing various text types of academic and business discourse. The course ends with an exam.

            Planned learning activities and teaching methods
        
        
            The course is delivered in English through a mixture of practical sessions, independent learning, research, and project work.  Major activities performed by the students include classroom performance, research projects, analytical essay, and module tests. A student can score a maximum of 60 points and a minimum of 36 points for these activities that are components of formative assessment. 
        
    
            Assessment methods and criteria
        
        
            With a 100-point assessment system used, a final grade for the course is a sum of the points earned for the formative assessment (max – 60; min - 36) and summative assessment (max – 40; min – 24). Formative assessment is targeted at classroom performance (20 points), research projects (10 points), analytical essay (10 points), module tests (20 points). Summative assessment is an exam that integrates 2 writing assignments (rhetorical analysis of the text - 15 points; a language focus task – 10 points) and an oral interview (discussion of a theoretical topic on rhetoric/communication theory – 15 points). The exam is designed to cover the intended learning outcomes (LO) of the course such as LO 1.1-1.4, 2.1-2.3, 4.1.
