Successful performance in this course builds on prior knowledge of the fundamental concepts and terminological framework acquired through the course "Modern Ukrainian language" (disciplines: phonology, lexicology and lexical semantics, morphemics and word formation, morphology, syntax, stylistics) as well as the knowledge of the metalanguage in such courses as "General linguistics" and "Theoretical grammar of the Ukrainian language". Course participants are expected to be able to develop their own Ukrainian language curriculum plans and textbooks; to use teaching methods and techniques in various forms of organisational learning in schools; to build sets of exercises and training tasks to provide grammatical awareness and language structural performance in students. The course prerequisites also emphasise communication skills for the implementation of heuristic search, informative/ explanatory, assessment, evaluating, and encouraging strategies of pedagogical discourse.

            Course content

The course aims to build knowledge of theoretical researches in the modern Ukrainian language, particularly in grammar (formal grammar, structural and semantic, and communicative aspects), as well as the introduction of scientific achievements in cognition and study of language units into modern school education.
Abstract. The course is based on the fundamental issues of foreign and domestic linguistics, the communicative approach to teaching and the responsible role of a teacher in the educational process. The course consists of two substantive parts.
(1)  The history of developmen of modern grammar studies; new trends analysis in the development of sentence and text teaching, conceptual and terminological framework of functional linguistics, structural syntax, semantic and syntactic sentence dependencies.
(2)  The projection of theoretical knowledge of modern grammar studies on school grammar; ways to effectively present complex scientific questions to school students.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course is delivered in Ukrainian through a mixture of lectures, practical sessions, independent learning, and the following methods are used: problem solving lecture, research, and project work. Major activities performed by the students include classroom discussions, educational presentation, individual/group project, and module tests. A student can score a maximum of 60 points and a minimum of 36 points for these activities that are components of formative assessment. The course ends with an exam.

            Assessment methods and criteria

The final course grade is a sum of the points earned for the formative assessment (a student can score a maximum of 60 and a minimum of 36 points for these activities that are components of formative assessment) and summative assessment (max – 40; min – 24). Formative assessment is targeted at classroom discussions (max – 20; min – 10), educational presentation (max – 11; min – 7), individual/group projects (max – 11; min – 7) and module tests (max – 18; min – 12). Summative assessment is an exam that integrates a writing assignment (20 points) and an oral interview (20 points). The exam is designed to cover the intended learning outcomes (LO) of the course such as LO 1.1-1.5, 2.1-2.4. A detailed description of assessment scoring is given in the course description made public on the official site of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
