Learning outcomes
PLO 7 Understand the main issues of philology and approaches to their solution using appropriate methods and innovative approaches. PLO 13 Analyze and interpret Ukrainian and foreign fiction and folklore, define their specificity and place in literature process (according to the selected specialization). PLO 19 Have the skills to participate in theoretical and/or applied studies in the field of philology. PLO 21.1 To know the theory of literature as a branch of literary studies that elucidates the specifics of literature as a form of art, reveals the ways and means of penetrating the content of each specific work of art, and provides an opportunity to understand the specifics of the literary process through the presence in it of such typical structures as genre, genre, style. PLO 23.1 Interpret works of art according to their genre, poetic and stylistic features.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
To know the basics of literary studies, old and new Ukrainian literature, the basics of Ukrainian and foreign culture, the history of foreign literature (within university programs). To be able to analyze the artistic features of works of various genres and styles. Have the skills to use the acquired knowledge to write essays, annotations, reviews, articles, etc.
Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to deepen the knowledge of philology students about realism as a literary direction, to acquaint them with the essence of discussions surrounding its emergence, time limits, aesthetic principles and principles, interaction with other literary directions, and the work of prominent representatives.

Educational activities during the semester: answers in the class, additions, participation in the discussion, control work, presentations. Teaching methods: lecture, seminar class, independent work.

Answers in class: minimum - 1 p., maximum - 5 p. Supplements and participation in discussions: minimum - 1 p., maximum - 2 p. Essay tasks: minimum - 1 p., maximum - 10 p. Control work: minimum – 1 p., maximum – 20 p. The form of the final evaluation is the credit. Grading scale: not counted: 0–59 b. enrolled: 60–100 b.
