Learning outcomes
"PLO 3 Organize the process of learning and self-education. PLO 5 Cooperate with colleagues, representatives of other cultures and religions, supporters of different political views, etc. PLO 8 Know and understand the language system, general characteristics of literature as the art of words, history of the Ukrainian language and literature, and be able to apply this knowledge in the professional activity. PLO 13 Analyze and interpret Ukrainian and foreign fiction and folklore, define their specificity and place in literature process (according to the selected specialization). PLO 15 Carry out linguistic and literary analysis of the texts of various styles and genres. "

Prerequisites and co-requisites
"Prior to mastering or studying the given course, the student should be familiarized with: 1. Gender-genre division of literature; 2. Basic literary theoretical concepts necessary for literary analysis. The student should possess basic skills and abilities to ascertain the specific place of Western European artistic tradition (in the eras of Antiquity and the Middle Ages), formed in the school course on ""Foreign Literature"" and ""World History""."
Course content
The subject of the course includes the regularities of the development of the literary process in the era of Antiquity and the Middle Ages as well as the specific issues and poetics of these periods. The aim of the course is to familiarize future philologists with the literary history of the ancient world and Western European Middle Ages, to form ideas about the specifics of philosophical-aesthetic principles of literary practice of representatives of these periods, and to contribute to the assimilation of a complex of concepts related to the history of foreign literature of these periods (main trends, styles, genres, ideological and artistic concepts) in the global and Ukrainian historical-cultural context.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Teaching methods: a lecture, a seminar, independent work. Educational activities throughout the semester: participation in discussions, the individual project (the diary of a reader), the midterm test.
Assessment methods and criteria
"Answer during seminars – 3 max/ 2 min; the individual project (the diary of a reader) – 14 max/8 min; the midterm test – 10 max/6 min; the final exam – 34 max/18 min. The form of final control is a credit. The pass grade is given based on the student's performance throughout the semester and does not presuppose additional assesment. Grades: "Pass" – 60–100 "Fail" – 0–59.
