Course content
The discipline "Fundamentals of religious cosmology" introduces students to ideas about the origin of the universe in the form of a creation myth, about further evolution, the modern world and nature, as well as about its possible fate or destination. The program's lecture course focuses on the interpretation of various traditions in religion or religious mythology that state how and why things are the way they are, and what the meaning of it all is. The difference between cosmology and theology, as well as religious cosmology and scientific cosmology, based on the results of the study of astronomy and similar fields, which differ in conceptual ideas about the physical structure of the world and its place in the universe, its creation, as well as forecasts or predictions about its future, is analyzed.
An overview of the various variations of religious cosmology is given, including those of Indian origin, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism; religious beliefs of China; as well as the beliefs of Abrahamic faiths such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Religious cosmologies that were transformed into the formal logic of metaphysical systems, such as Platonism, Neoplatonism, Gnosticism, Taoism, Kabbalah, etc., are analyzed.
