Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to offer a systematic account of the forms, types and models of social communication, as implemented in ancient written texts and modern media. A key theme will be technologies of influence on a mass audience, in both ancient and modern contexts. Students will learn the five canonical procedures for the formation of a textual message and other key concepts of classical and modern rhetoric. The standpoint of the course is that ancient rhetoric is a highly developed field of application of communication technologies. The syllabus will show how ancient rhetoric serves as an important source for the theory of the communication, for the principles of argumentation, and for the formation and transmission of moral values and moral emotions. The prism of modern mechanisms of influence on mass audiences, from spin and image technologies to propaganda and informational wars, will shed new light on ancient experiences. In turn, the rhetorical methods described in the treatises of Aristotle, Cicero and Quintilian will open new perspectives on contemporary communication theory.
