Learning outcomes
PLO 11. To carry out a scientific analysis of language, speech and literary material, interpret and structure it taking into account appropriate methodological principles, formulate generalizations based on independently processed data.
PLO 14. To create, analyze, and edit texts of various genres and styles.
PLO 15. To choose optimal research approaches and methods of translation analysis for the specific language and literary material.

Proficiency in the German language at level B2 and above.
Course content
A practical discipline with a primary focus on written Ukrainian-German communication involving an expert translator. After a brief overview of translation paradigms, the basics of functional translation, text types (according to K. Reiss), types of texts, translation methods and techniques, pre-translation analysis of the text (according to K. Nord), and more, students work with various types and genres of texts (academic, journalistic, advertising texts, etc.). They analyze Ukrainian texts considering the translation task, translate into German, and engage in informed discussions about potential errors in the Ukrainian translation and ways to avoid them (by comparing text composition rules and norms (conventions) for different types of texts in Ukrainian and German). They also examine translation quality and the factors influencing it. Additionally, students practice their text composition skills in the German language, expand their stylistic range in German to confidently produce high-quality translations. Students who are not familiar with key concepts and paradigms of translation studies receive a portfolio of materials from the instructor at the beginning of the course. The discipline concludes with a final assessment in the form of an exam.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course includes practical sessions, independent work, presentations, information research, studying provided materials, reflection, participation in discussions and debates, practical exercises for pre-translation analysis, feedback.
Assessment methods and criteria
Graded translation with pre-translation analysis and justified explanation of translation decisions (comment-based evaluation).
Timely and complete completion of homework assignments (predefined text composition exercises, translation mini-tasks, pre-translation analysis) (comment-based evaluation).
The number of assignments is determined individually, based on the potential capabilities of the group. Students will be informed about the evaluated tasks and the assessment criteria before starting their execution.
Active and constructive participation in discussions and debates (expressing opinions, providing justifications) (comment-based evaluation).
