discussing professionally-oriented topics, presentation of research results and
innovative projects.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
A student should acquire the following linguistic, socio-cultural and professional communicative competences: the lexis and grammar needed to understand and produce professionally oriented texts; structured methods of writing scientific work; discursive stylistic features of the text; linguistic forms peculiar to formal and colloquial registers of professional broadcasting; the basic rules of the English syntax. A student should be able to communicate orally and in writing within the scope of a subject; use appropriate vocabulary and grammatical stylistic forms; discern and create valuable examples of scientific communication in English; summarize and annotate authentic and professionally-oriented texts of different genres and styles without using a dictionary; compose an annotation and an abstract to a professionally-oriented text.
Course content
The course "English for Academic Purposes” is part of a Master
students’ program. The discipline is a compulsory one. The course curriculum is
designed to ensure personality development and satisfy the master students'
professional needs. It aims at the further development of professionally-oriented
communicative competences in academic writing and speaking, which allows the
learners to solve communicative tasks of any difficulty, to communicate effectively in
their academic and professional environments.
The aim of the course is to form professionally-oriented communicative competences
in academic writing and speaking at C1 level for effective written and oral
performance in the professional environment.

Assessment methods and criteria
Participation in a whole-class discussion, writing
assessment tasks, essay, abstract, annotated bibliography, presentation. Summative
assessment: credit. The total score for the term makes maximum 80 points and
minimum 48 points. The total score for the credit makes maximum 20 points and
minimum 12 points. Forms of assessing gradual learning outcomes. Participation in a
whole-class discussion on the basis of the previously learned material makes 2,5 points
for a topic; max. 10 points and min. 6 points (10 / 6) for the course. The module test paper performed in writing
is scored 10/6.
