Learning outcomes
PR06. Be able to determine and analyze the basic physicochemical properties of organic compounds that are part of biological agents (proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids).
PR10. Be able to conduct experimental research to determine the influence of physicochemical and biological factors of the external environment on the vital activity of cells of living organisms.
PR11. To be able to carry out basic genetic and cytological studies to improve and increase the biosynthetic capacity of biological agents, taking into account the principles of biosafety, biosecurity and bioethics (induced mutagenesis using physical and chemical mutagenic factors, selection and accumulation of auxotrophic mutants, transfer of genetic information, etc.)
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Successful completion of courses that cover basic issues related to such areas as biochemistry, cytology.
2. Knowledge of elementary theoretical foundations of biochemistry, embryology.
3. Ability to independently apply knowledge of chemistry, general biology and other disciplines, use a computer, work with scientific literature.
Course content
The course is devoted to modern ideas about the mechanisms of heredity and variability. Significant emphasis is placed on the application of knowledge of classical and molecular genetics in biotechnological processes. The basic principles of inheritance of monogenic and polygenic traits, molecular genetic mechanisms of trait variability, features of the organization of the genetic apparatus and the course of genetic processes in viruses, prokaryotes, unicellular and multicellular eukaryotes, much attention is paid to human genetics. In the course of studying the discipline the practical application of genetics methods in biotechnology is given or demonstrated. Special emphasis is placed on the methods of genetic engineering, genetic therapy and the connection between genetics and biotechnology.
