PLO 7. Understand the main issues in philology and approaches to resolving them, using appropriate methods and innovative approaches Learning Outcome 8. Successful completion of the theoretical and practical courses in French and Latin taught over two semesters of study.
Course content
The objective of the course is to familiarize future philologists with the main features of the Romance languages, their origin, classification, history, and the spread of the French language both in France and beyond, as well as with the levels of language structure and current trends in language evolution. Introduction to French Philology is a core discipline for students majoring in 035.055 Romance Languages and Literatures (including translation), first language – French (academic program French Language and Translation, English Language and a Second Romance Language). It is taught in the third semester; the course workload amounts to 2 ECTS credits, 60 academic hours (14 hours of lectures, 16 hours of practical classes, 30 hours of independent study). The form of assessment is an exam. The course includes two content modules and two final module tests, which culminate in an exam. The subject of the discipline is the identification and study of the French language within the group of Romance languages. The course provides students with a comprehensive understanding, based on modern scientific approaches, of the formation and evolution of Romance languages in general and French in particular, as well as its role in the contemporary globalized world.

Assessment methods and criteria
The course includes 3 content modules and 3 module tests. Final performance control ends with an exam at the end of the semester. The calculation of the final score of the content module is performed by adding the resulting score for written and oral answers to the result of the module test (max.20, min.12). Final performance control ends with an exam at the end of the semester (max.40, min.24). The final result is calculated as a simple accumulation of final points for the content modules and the exam (maximum - 100 points).
