Learning outcomes
Providing students with general and professional competencies, including: the ability to communicate in the state language both orally and in writing; skills in using information and communication technologies; the ability to search, process and analyze information from various sources; the ability to work autonomously; the ability to apply simple quantitative methods when researching the spheres of the landscape envelope; independently investigate natural materials and statistical data (in accordance with specialization) in field and laboratory conditions, describe, analyze, document and report on the results.
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
1) Successful completion of the courses “Social Geography”, “Geographical Local Studies and Regional Studies” and completion of the “Teaching Practice on the Fundamentals of Field Economic and Geographical Research”. 2) knowledge of the theoretical foundations of social geography, location of production, general principles of conducting scientific research, namely the collection of primary geographical information, organization of office work, primary information processing. 3) mastery of the deductive method of proving and refuting statements, the ability to think logically, build algorithms for solving typical problems. 4) mastery of computer programs MS Word, MS Excel, software for using the Internet, conducting simple mathematical calculations.
Course content
General ideas about mathematical and statistical research methods, levels of mathematization of geography, stages of development of mathematical and statistical methods in geographical research are presented. The content and features of the calculation of the most frequently used quantities are revealed: arithmetic, quadratic, geometric and harmonic means, as well as variation indicators, dynamic series. The features of the use of statistical grouping methods, correlation analysis, and the sampling method in geographical research are presented. One of the most important goals is to form in students the skills to independently choose one or another research method depending on the nature and properties of the object and the research tasks set.

Lectures, practical work Total volume 90 hours, including: Lectures – 28 hours Practical work – 14 hours Independent work – 48 hours
Assessment methods and criteria
The level of achievement of the set learning objectives is determined by the results of written tests and practical work, their discussion and defense. The specific weight of learning outcomes in the final assessment, provided that they are mastered at the appropriate level, is as follows: 1. Test (test): RN 1.1.— RN 1.2 20 points/12 points. 2. Test (test): RN 1.3.— RN 1.6 20 points/12 points. 3. Test (test): RN 1.7.— RN 1.8 20 points/12 points. 3. Verification and defense of practical work RN 2.1-2.8 30/ 18 points 4. Teamwork during practical work, discussion RN – 3.4 10/6 points. The final assessment is not conducted and the student receives a grade according to the performance of the main types of work during the semester.
