Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Successful mastering of the courses "Molecular Biology of Viruses", "Genetics of Viruses", "Biochemistry of Viruses", "Anatomy and Physiology of Plants", "Microbiology", "Virology", "General Genetics". 2. Be able to independently apply knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, etc. disciplines, work with scientific and methodological literature. 3. Have basic skills in working with electron microscopic images of viruses and the characteristics of the virus to find its taxonomic position.
Course content
The discipline "Viruses of microorganisms" is a basic discipline that forms an idea of viruses of microorganisms and their structural and functional diversity; acquaints with prospects of development of modern methods of detection and diagnostics of viruses of microorganisms, application of preparations on the basis of bacteriophages in the industry and medicine; teaches to navigate in the taxonomic diversity of viruses of microorganisms. An important place is given to the issues of morphogenesis, genetics and molecular biology of viruses of microorganisms. The stages of development of viruses of microorganisms with different life cycles are covered in detail. The main mechanisms of protection of prokaryotes from bacteriophages and general principles of phage therapy are considered.
